NEW BOOK: THE SALTVILLE ENTREPRENEURS AND THEIR ENDLESS LITIGATION  by Mary B. Kegley and William T. Buchanan, Jr. The manufacture of salt at the Virginia Saltworks in Smyth and Washington counties is documented from the 1790s through 1874 primarily from three Supreme Court cases and more than forty lawsuits found in Wythe County, Virginia. The story is told through the eyes of the owners and their families, lessees, managers, and employees. Early entrepreneurs had mercantile establishments from Fincastle, Virginia, to New Orleans, with many along the Tennessee River between Kingsport and Huntsville, Alabama. 86 pages plus index, and 36 illustrations. William King and James White of Abingdon are major characters. Prestons, Gardners, McCalls, and Sanders are also mentioned. Processes  to test salinity, to manufacture salt, to ship to far away destinations are all mentioned. IN Virginia: includes shipping and tax $25.50; out of state including shipping $24.50. Abstracts of Court Orders of Wythe County, 1860-1865, compiled by Janie Z. Dillon and Mary B. Kegley, 188 pages with extensive index, soft bound. This volume contains information abstracted from the order books giving the story of what was happening at home during the Civil War. Eighty deceased soldiers were documented; slaves, slave owners, free people of "colour" and Gentlemen Justices are all mentioned. Wills, guardianships, settlements of estates, applications for wine sellers, ministers and lawyers to practice in the county, and provisions for those who were sick with smallpox are all documented.
