IT HAS ARRIVED: September 2013, ANNOUNCING A NEW BOOK

(1) SISTERS' SAGA: CORRESPONDENCE OF THE McKEE SISTERS OF

WYTHE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, AND BEAVER, PENNSYLVANIA, 1836-1883.

Compiled and annotated by Mary B. Kegley and Nan Oliver with more

than 120 photographs.

This is a book of a different kind: letters written in Wytheville, Virginia, by

the McKee sisters, Jane, Mary and Eliza. This unusual collection is a true picture of

the lives of wealthy women of the nineteenth century from a small southern

town. Sisters Saga: Correspondence of the McKee Sisters of Wythe County,

Virginia, and Beaver, Pennsylvania, 1836-1883, has two hundred letters

reproduced in their entirety. They tell of birth and death, of lingering illnesses, of

their religious beliefs,  and their love of adventure and travel. Friends and family

are primary subjects and they constantly report on their lives in spite of

difficulties.

Coming to Wytheville to attend to the health of their uncle, Adam McKee,

a local merchant, the women inherited the mercantile business following his

death in 1842, giving them regular income which they used to travel and to assist

family members in Beaver, Pennsylvania. Two of the sisters Jane and Mary

married local gentlemen. Jane was married to widower, Gordon Cloyd Kent; Mary

to widower Dr. Robert Crockett. Eliza lived in various places near Pittsburgh,

visited her sisters on several occasions and never married. The fourth sister,

Nancy, married William Scott and lived in Beaver, Pennsylvania. Her descendants

saved the letters for future enjoyment, and the Beaver Area Heritage Museum

has preserved them.

Jane Kent had one son, Joseph Gordon Kent, and although the Crocketts

had no children, Mary brought her niece, Nannie McKee, to Wytheville to live

with them when she was about six years old. Nannie stayed to attend school,

married and had her children born in Virginia. The saga of Joseph and Nannie are

also included in the story and their lives are brought up to the present time, a

saga of its own.

The letters, documented with more than 700 footnotes and more than

120 photos of the people mentioned in the 295 pages bring these unusual sisters

and their relatives and friends to life.
